The London Marathon raises over £50 million each year for charity, and since taking over sponsorship in 2009, Virgin Money have helped the marathon have an even greater impact, by launching Virgin Money Giving – a not-for-profit fundraising website which ensures more of the money raised reaches the charities that need it.
In collaboration with four23, Virgin Money have also helped to create a social experience around the event, with the #extramile campaign.
For the last four months, thousands have been sharing the highs and lows of their training using #extramile on Twitter and Instagram – the early winter starts, the carb-loaded brunches, the mileage milestones and their very personal reasons for taking on the marathon.
Their collective efforts have been bought together at extramile.co.uk, a digital platform designed to connect runners, and keep them motivated, inspired and entertained on their marathon journey via weekly newsletters and competitions.
A timeline page on the platform displays every post tagged #extramile to create a shared marathon experience, and runners can also set up a personalised timeline - where every one of their tweets, post-run photos and fundraising milestones are celebrated on their very own page - making it easy for them to share their hard work with family and friends, and raise money for their chosen causes.
We’re privileged to have shared the marathon journeys of so many dedicated and inspiring people through #extramile, and we wish everyone running this year the very best of luck.
Join us at extramile.co.uk on Sunday 26th April to celebrate with 35,000 runners as they become proud Virgin London Marathon finishers.
