By day, the space featured a unique programme of creative discussions, interactive workshops and screenings. Talks included fashion photographer Nick Knight and graphic design icon Peter Saville. Somerset House Summer Screen

Somerset House Summer Screen

four23 were recently commissioned by Somerset House to create a film that encapsulates the arts institution’s creative ethos and pioneering spirit.

Premiering at the Film4 Summer Screen, the film captures various unexpected elements of the venue, shining a light on its world-renowned exhibitions, events and uncovering the artists in residence, showcasing its home-grown creativity.

Visuals demonstrate the cultural institution as it is today, pushing intellectual and creative boundaries, and displaying the multitude of disciplines housed within its walls – from film to live performance and fine art to fashion.

Henry Poole: An Introduction

Henry Poole: An Introduction

four23 studio will be creating a series of films to introduce legendary Savile Row tailor Henry Poole.

Dating back seven generations, the story began when James Poole, a cloth merchant, came to London to seek his fortune. His son, Henry Poole, learnt the art of tailoring and the family name became an institution. Since then, the label has dressed the likes of Edward VII and Napoleon III and is credited with inventing the evening dinner jacket.

The first film will demonstrate the atelier’s precise approach to tailoring, starting with the important discussion between client and pattern cutter around fabric and cloth. As it is crafted, the suit passes through the hands of up to five expert artisans specializing in a different component, down to the smallest details; from pockets to finishing and pressing. Between every stage, the cutter adapts and holds fittings with the client.

The project will culminate in an exclusive collaboration launch event hosted at Merchants Taylors’ Hall for 100 guests. Greeted by a string quartet, the evening will feature a chance to explore the atelier’s archive and include an intimate dinner followed by a panel discussion with Simon Cundey and Tom Pendry from Henry Poole.

Open Source Hack Workshop

Open Source Hack Workshop

four23 have curated a series of workshops to explore an open source approach to creativity.

Using Sam Labs’ SMART construction kits, guests were invited to experiment with the Internet of Things, transforming everyday objects through sensors and code.

After setting up their own connected networks, input triggers and actions, guests created hacks using automated sound modules, step counters and Twitter responsive lights.

The event was hosted at Fish Island Labs in Hackney Wick, a co-working space created by the Barbican for creative entrepreneurs working across art, technology, fashion and design.

The workshops were hosted in collaboration with tech innovators Sam Labs who create kits designed to encourage children to explore their inventive potential.

Liberty London

Liberty London

One of four23’s latest projects includes the art direction, styling and set design for Liberty London’s graphic and floral fabric range.

Spacial Design Director, Harriet Paterson, created a contemporary reinvention of the aesthetic movement inspired by Arthur Liberty’s travels and global gatherings.

Photographed amongst scattered playing cards, rocking horses and vases filled with wildflowers, the images are evocative of the historical department store’s eclectic arts and crafts heritage.

The product range including cushions, lampshades and throws, styled on beautiful furniture that has been upholstered in rich woven jacquards and ornate tapestries inspired by the archive.

Maverick Viñales in Andorra

Maverick Viñales in Andorra

The four23 FILMS team have returned from Andorra after directing a film that focuses on the unique training methods of MotoGP racer Maverick Viñales.

Viñales is a former MotoGP3 world champion and currently ranked top 3 in MotoGP. In the film Viñales will take the viewer through his daily routine from a local gym in Andorra, explaining how his training gives an advantage over his rivals.

Trained by a former Olympic gymnastics coach, he will describe how his physique has been strengthened using specialist exercises that allow him to move across the bike for sharp turns, keeping him in full control of its impressive power.

Viñales will demonstrate some of his training techniques, taking to the rings and climbing rope, building strength, flexibility and resilience a regular gym workout routine wouldn’t give him.

The Store, The Strand

The Store, The Strand

four23 recently created an exclusive event, including live music performance and 3D cinema, at The Store - central London’s newest cultural destination.

Taking over three floors of the brutalist building, four23’s spacial design team created a series of interactive installations and a dramatic performance space that followed the essentialist design aesthetic of the building.

500 guests entered via an immersive colour haze tunnel and were supplied with 3D eyewear that enhanced installations and revealed exhibition graphics, whilst a decoder cinema presented film content.

A neon-lit stage in front of a panoramic view of the Thames created a striking backdrop, before adidas Originals ambassador and US hip-hop artist Pusha T took to the stage.

Live Stream Broadcast

Live Stream Broadcast

four23 recently curated a series of livestreamed talks, bringing together artists and commentators to discuss creativity and culture.

The first talk, hosted by Jamz Supernova, saw artists including Mabel, Loyle Carner and Cadenza, discuss what originality means to them. Each creator took to the stage individually, before being brought together for a panel discussion.

During the live panel, viewers could participate in polls and ask questions via Facebook Live and Twitter, creating a forum for viewers to shape and mold the conversation, and allow their voices to be heard.

The second talk was hosted by Alex Powis and featured Gary Aspden, Gary Warnett and Alex Williams, who discussed the many facets of youth culture.

Shadow Art

Shadow Art

four23 partnered with Originals to produce a one-off live music experience headlined by American hip-hop artist Desiigner.

Transforming a warehouse in London’s Docklands into a large-scale laser light show, casting dramatic shadows across all performers and guests to create an immersive experience and unique performance space. Playing on the theme of ‘light and shadow’ the space was designed as a giant installation for guests to explore and experiment with during the performance.

Desiigner - who signed to Kanye West’s ‘GOOD Music’ record label – was supported by performances from Nadia Rose and Abracadabra, as well as a DJ set by Rinse FM’s Maya Jama.

How To Build An Igloo

How To Build An Igloo

Inspired by Douglas Wilkinson’s 1949 classic short film for the National Film Board of Canada, following two Inuit men in Canada’s Far North as they cut and place snow blocks and create a shelter in one-and-a-half hours, ‘How To Build An Igloo’ is the 2016 Christmas project by the four23 team.

XBYO at Paris Fashion Week

XBYO at Paris Fashion Week

four23 have returned from Paris Fashion Week, where we invited a fashion audience to co-create a limited-edition magazine for the debut XBYO collection.

Taking over a gallery space in La Marais, we created a temporary publishing studio from which we curated a programme of hands-on craft workshops, inspired by the collection’s Japanese roots.

Starting with a talk by collection designer and former Commes des Garcons pattern cutter Ms Nakamura, the guests were immersed in the story of the collection before taking part in a series of interactive sessions.

Print Van Paris were commissioned to lead a screen printing workshop, using the unique shapes and patterns of the collection. Whilst graphic designer Arjun Harrison-Mann guided guests through a typography masterclass, using conductive inks.

Paris-based artist Jimbo Barbu taught guests how to merge the analogue with the digital using scanners and printers to create unique collages.

The day concluded with a communal dining experience, curated by experimental Parisian food innovators Animal Kitchen, who developed a Japanese-inspired tapas menu.

Kendrick Lamar's Block Party

Kendrick Lamar's Block Party

four23 recently collaborated with Reebok to host a UK appearance from Grammy Award winner Kendrick Lamar.

Inspired by Kendrick’s LA roots we converted the empty lots of a former TV production studio to stage a block party event. Apple Music’s Beats1 presenter Julie Adenuga played host for the night as guests navigated murals by emerging young artist-illustrators Karis Knight, James Dawe, Ben Tallon and Joe Clarke. The event culminated in a live performance by Kendrick to an intimate crowd of only 300 guests.

Earlier in the day, Kendrick made a surprise appearance at a specially commissioned music workshop for young people in partnership with the Brighter Sound music charity. The workshop encouraged participants to experiment with freestyle MCing, lyric-writing, production, Djing and mixing.

The young guests and tutors were stunned by a surprise appearance from Kendrick, who joined the participants in an impromptu freestyle rap battle.

Footage of Kendrick’s appearance was shared globally across social media and in hundreds of titles online.

Future Tour of New York

Future Tour of New York

In December, four23 were commissioned to curate a 15 guest trip to New York, exploring the theme of future technology and innovation in the City.

Highlights from the trip included a 5-course menu at the Highlands Dinner Club, a social and culinary laboratory hosted at a secret venue in Harlem. An NYC themed culinary journey was crafted by chef and architect Benjamin Walmer, and featuring live performance art with each course. Watch Benjamin’s TED talk on how food connects us here.

Our team facilitated a workshop session at the East Village workspace of to.be, in partnership with Tomorrow Lab. Both companies are pioneers in new technologies and materials, taking an innovative approach to traditional craft.

The session explored how technological innovation has redefined what craft means in the 21st century. To.be explained how their software platform opens up possibilities for modern creatives to connect and collaborate, and Tomorrow Lab guided guests through the hardware components that make wearable tech and connected product design possible.

A private film screening of Design is One: Lella & Massimo Vignelli at the Wythe Hotel cinema in Williamsburg introduced guests to the work of one of New York’s most iconic design studios.

Finally, we collaborated with a selection of NY-based Photographers to take guests on a tour to explore the more unusual workspaces in each of the boroughs of NYC.

four23 would like to thank all of our partners on the trip, especially our New York natives and guides, Ryan Parrilla, Christina Paik and Jose Ocasio.

Originals Tubular X London Launch

Originals Tubular X London Launch

Last night saw the launch of Originals Tubular X in the UK.

four23 transformed Kachette; a former train station in London’s East End into a photo playground, transporting guests into a visual world of ‘Tubular’.

The ‘tube’ shaped venue was transformed into a dramatic tunnel of light; a kaleidoscopic digital video wall displayed infinite iterations of graphics inspired by the city of London; the length of an entire wall was projection mapped with a live catwalk including models seeming to disappear around the edge of the wall.

A collection of PHHHOTO portraits created by guests on the night can be viewed here.
